"Strength and military skill were crucial for Anglian rulers who led their men into battle.  They commissioned highly decorated swords as symbols of their status.  Swords were fearsome weapons but they could also be beautiful.  This strong blade is combined with an ornate silver-gilt handle.  It was probably owned by a powerful earl in the service of a Northumbrian king.
