Objectskeggöx 'bearded axe'

National Museum of Ireland -- Archaeology > Viking Dublin *
"VIKING BURIAL  Memorial Park, Islandbridge, Dublin  9th century ...
This group of iron objects comes from an excavated Viking burial.  It consisted of a sword with handle inlaid with silver wires, a spearhead and an axehead.  The burial was also accompanied by two handles and four nails, perhaps the fittings from a wooden casket and a painted iron object of uncertain use but perhaps used as a firesteel along with a piece of flint to light a fire."

* Jorvik Viking Centre
"Battle axes are distinctly Viking.  There were many varieties of axe.  This 'bearded' axe could be used to hook an enemy's shield."
