"Jadeite Pendant, Stone  Maya  Late Classic Period
Although this pendant was produced during the Late Classic it displays Olmec influence.  The curvilinear designs surrounding the face, the large almond-shaped eyes and flatten nose [sic] are all reminiscent of Earth Monster representations.  However, this pendant depicts a young Maize God emerging through the earth.
"The three circular designs below the face are referred to as the 'heart of heaven' and seen throughout ancient Mesoamerica.  The heart of heaven is a part of the Maya creation story and recalls the promise of resurrection that is suggested by the Maize God's return to life."
