La poignée en corbeille, de cette épée s'appelle une poignée << mortuaire >>.  Ces poignées sont grossièrement ciselées en forme de têtes, représentant quelquefois Charles Ier d'Angleterre et sa reine, Henrietta Maria.  On prétend que les monarchistes s'en servirent pendant les guerres civiles en Angleterre (1642-1653)."

This is one of the finest examples of a silver-encrusted basket-hilted sword.  It is believed to have belonged to Sir William Twysden (1566-1629) of Royden Hall, Kent.  The spherical basket and large round pommel are characteristic of what was referred to in the early seventeenth century as an 'Irish hilt,' the term Irish then being synonymous with the Scottish Highlands." ...
